The short version
We do not run an application server. There is no account to create, nothing to sign in to, and no copy of your data anywhere but your own device.
The one server we do run serves this website and nothing else; the app never contacts it. We cannot see where you have been, because there is nowhere for that information to go.
The app is not entirely offline, because it downloads the map tiles. The map is drawn from vector tiles — small pieces of map data — which the app requests for the area on screen as you pan and zoom, together with the fonts and icons the style requires.
Planning a route submits your waypoints to a routing service. Both go to third parties, and the section below names them.
What stays on your device
Everything the app records is stored locally, in the app's own database, and is removed when you delete the app:
- Recorded trips and the GPS traces behind them, including timestamps and speeds.
- Routes you have planned, drawn, edited or saved.
- Your settings, map appearance, and custom map styles.
None of it is uploaded, backed up to a service of ours, or shared between devices. If you have iCloud device backup switched on, your iPhone may include the app's data in that backup — that is Apple's mechanism, covered by Apple's privacy policy, and it is not something the app initiates or can read.
Exports are the one way data leaves deliberately: when you export a trip as GPX, the file goes wherever you send it. That is your choice and your copy.
What leaves your device
These are the only network requests the app makes. None of them carries a name, an email address, a device identifier or an account, because the app does not have any of those to send.
| Service | What it receives | When |
|---|---|---|
| OpenFreeMap | Requests for the map tiles covering the area on screen, which reveal roughly where you are looking on the map. | Whenever a map is displayed. |
| Valhalla (FOSSGIS) | The start, end and any waypoints of a route you ask it to plan. Not your recorded trips. | Only when you plan a route. |
| GraphHopper | The same route-planning waypoints, plus the API key you supplied. Off unless you turn it on. | Only if you paste your own GraphHopper key into Settings, and only when planning. |
| Apple | Tip purchases, handled entirely by the App Store. Payment details never reach the app. | Only when you leave a tip. |
Each of those providers will see the IP address your request comes from, as any web request reveals, and each has its own privacy policy governing what it does with that.
We have no agreement with them that gives us access to anything, and we receive nothing back from them about you.
What we do not do
- No analytics. There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, and no telemetry of any kind in the app. We do not know how many screens you open, which features you use, or whether you use the app at all.
- No advertising and no tracking. There is no ad network, no advertising identifier, and no data shared with anyone for advertising or profiling. The app does not track you across other apps or websites.
- No selling data. We do not sell any data about you and your application usage. We do not have this data at all.
- No account. We never ask for a name, an email address, or a sign-in.
Location permission
The app asks for location access because recording where you travelled is the whole of what it does.
If you allow background location, it keeps recording while your phone is locked or the app is not on screen — otherwise a trip would stop the moment you put the phone in a pocket.
You can withdraw either permission at any time in iOS Settings; the app keeps working, and simply cannot record until you grant it again.
Purchases
Tips are processed by Apple through in-app purchase. We never see your payment details, and we receive no personally identifiable information about tippers — only Apple's aggregate sales reporting.
A tip grants no entitlement, so nothing about it is checked against any server of ours, and nothing is stored beyond a local count the app shows you as a thank-you.
This website
The site sets no cookies and runs no analytics. If you use the contact form, the name, email address and message you type are sent by email to us so that we can reply, and are not stored in a database, added to a mailing list, or used for anything else.
Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server request logs, as all web hosts do.
Children
The app is not directed at children and collects nothing about anyone, of any age.
Your rights
Rights of access, correction, export and erasure normally require the operator to hold data about you and produce it on request.
We hold none, so there is nothing for us to return or delete.
Your own copy is on your device: individual trips can be deleted inside the app, and deleting the app removes everything at once.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts doing something this page does not describe, this page changes first and the effective date at the top moves with it. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
Need to contact us?
If something on this page does not match what you observe the app doing, we would particularly like to hear about it.
Write to way@xelblch.dev and we will answer.
